63/64 Pre-Season Friendlies

In the lead up to the 63/64 Season two friendly 'trial' fixtures were arranged against Leeds United & Cambridge City. The press stated at the time:

"Last week's trial match with Leeds United must have impressed Doncaster Rovers Officials, for the Belle Vue outfit are taking part in a similar match with Cambridge United later this week. The trip to the University City will see team-Manager Mr. Oscar Hold & Trainer Lewis Clayton back among many of their friends, the pair having come from Cambridge to Rovers. It will also mean a further opportunity for close season signings to get in some match practice together.

Mr. Tom Garnett General Manager at Belle Vue said that like last week's try-out at Leeds, tonight's game at Cambridge would almost certainly see quite a considerable amount of chopping and changing in an effort to find the best 'blend' for the opening match at Brentford.

This is a type of pre-season training which obviously appeals to Rovers officials and the younger players have not been forgotten either. They get their chance to shine when they play an away match with Gainsborough, this will be a game for our younger players, North Regional and Intermediate League standard - said Mr Garnett. There will be no seniors in the team".

Rovers Trial game pleases Manager Oscar Hold

"The 265-mile round trip to Cambridge by Doncaster Rovers last night more than served the purpose for which Belle Vue officials intended it said Mr. Oscar Hold today.

All the close season signings were fielded including Keith Ripley, the left half signed yesterday (6th Aug, 1962)  at lunchtime and Alfie Hale who leaves for Dublin on Thursday to prepare for Sunday's International match between Eire & Iceland. Hale makes his second appearance in an Eire Jersey in this match when he lines up at inside left.

Talking of last night's trial spin, which ended in a 4-4 draw Mr. Hold said he fielded only 11 players. I made no changes at all, he said. In the first half in particular, they moved very well indeed, they blended well and I was quite pleased. No teams have yet been selected for Saturday's public trial match, which Mr. Hold confirmed, will be 'possibles' Vs 'Probables'. The tams won't be chosen until Friday, he said".

Belle Vue Players are now in the Money

"Doncaster Rovers first team players are now in the money. After a flying start to the new season - five points from three matches,, they are in the top four and this entitles the players to an extra bonus of £6. The board introduced a new wage incentive in the close season and the players have been quick to take an advantage.

The new incentive means that in addition to the normal win bonuses, the players get £6 a man if they are in the top 4, £4 a man in the top 8 and £2 in the top 12. Mr. J Garnham the clubs Chairman said that with these incentives it would be possible for the senior men to earn about £40 a week this season-provided they stay in the top four.

After a great start with successive away wins at Oxford & Stockport the first team men are determined to stay at the top. The chance is certainly there because they have three consecutive home games, although one of them is Wednesday's League Cup tie at York City. Only goal average keeps Rovers out of the top spot. The question is:can Rovers afford success? The board can only find these additional bonuses if the club's success is reflected in the attendances".
